8/2-8-5:
Cut out some downed trees on the Mountain Creek trail.
Went out and planted the rest of the trail signs on Mountain
Creek. Worked with a church group from Hampton Park
Baptist Church removing roots from the Sulphur Springs Trail.
Laid out the pin flag line for the Sulphur Springs re-route
through some very thick deadfall. Bradley O’Dell came
out and brought some manual wheelchairs for us to try and wheel
around the Lake Placid trail. Ben and I both made it
from the handicapped parking lot all the way to the overlook at
the dam. This trail should be navigable by anyone who is a
proficient manual chair operator (and who has a chair that is
equipped for any type of off road use).
Cleared corridor on the Sulphur Springs re-route, and then met
with another volunteer group from Hampton Park Church. We
went out with these guys and buffed out the trail tread on the
Mountain Creek trail. Went out with the chainsaws and
finished clearing the corridor for the Sulphur Springs re-route.
The deadfall was unbelievably thick, with a lot of poison ivy
and briars.
8/9-8/12:
Went and played paintball (off the clock) on Monday. On
Tuesday we built the retaining walls for the handicapped ramp
around the tree at the swimming area. We also built some
low retainers up to the bridge that crosses Lake Placid.
Spent the rest of the day carrying fill dirt in to level out the
ramp onto the bridge.
Filled in the handicapped ramp around the tree with fill dirt.
That afternoon, we cut some bench near the CCC bridge at the
front of the park to make a smooth tread for wheelchairs.
Built rock retainers into and out of the CCC bridge and filled
both sides with dirt. After these two days, someone in a
wheelchair should easily be able to make it from the handicapped
parking lot all the way past Shelter 1.
8/16-8/19:
Gathered rock from the woods along the road to Buckhorn for
retaining walls beyond Shelter 1. Spent the rest of the
day building the retaining walls that will facilitate a wide,
smooth tread all the way to the top of the spillway on the main
side of the lake. Spent the next day backfilling these
retaining walls. Wheelbarrowed in two and a half
truckloads of dirt to backfill the walls. The next day, we
cut the Sulphur Springs re-route through the thickest woods we
have dealt with yet.
8/23-8/26:
Cut back slope and threw sluff on the new re-route.
“Finish” finished the tread the next day. Went out
with chainsaws the next day and cut out all the obnoxious
deadfall across the trail on the upper section of Sulphur
Springs, making it completely passable on a bicycle (coming down
the hill). Flagged corridor and laid out the pin flag line
for the Archery range connection re-route.
8/30-8/31:
Met with John Lehman and a friend of his to walk over and
discuss the route for the trail race in October. Cleared
the corridor on the Archery range re-route, and came across a
huge yellowjacket’s nest. Came back that afternoon and
killed the nest.
