7/1/04:
Finished tread surface on the new connection from Mountain Creek
to Shelters 5&6. Also reclaimed and masked old
connection.
7/6/04-7/9/04:
Placed some large rocks in the new connection from Mt. Creek to
Shelters 5&6 as speed control for bikes. They work
really well, these rocks force bikes to weave their way down the
hill instead of just bombing the trail. Started building a
causeway through a low spot on Mt. Creek. GripHoisted four
huge rocks into place as retainers in the walls of the
causeway. Wheelbarrowed in a truckload of fist sized rocks to
be the base of the causeway. Built another small causeway
in front of the creek crossing on Mt. Creek. This causeway
was only about eight inches tall, but got rid of a low spot on
the trail.
7/12/04-7/15/04:
Worked with the Travelers Rest Beta Club to finish the causeway
that we started the previous week. This group did an
awesome job, we finished the causeway in two hours and it came
out a lot nicer than we had anticipated. That afternoon we
rock armored the bank coming out of the creek crossing on Mt.
Creek. Now the entire creek crossing is packed with either
rock or river sand and gravel, so it should stay put through
heavy use and rain. Built a rolling grade dip on the CCC
section of the Mt. Creek trail, this makes the climb out of the
lake a lot easier in a wheelchair. This grade dip also
improves drainage on this section of trail. Worked that
evening with some volunteers moving a large rock into
place on the Firetower Trail. Explored some of the new
land on the back side of the mountain, tried to get a better
feel of what we are dealing with as far as terrain.
7/19/04-7/22/04:
Broke up a beaver dam that was backing the creek up to the point
that it was only two feet from covering the trail. After
opening the dam up, the creek level dropped two feet in five
minutes, and went back to being about twenty feet from the
trail. Planned all the things that we need to do on the
Lake Placid trail to make the near side of the lake wheelchair
accessible. Gathered rock from the Mt. Lake access road
and Sulphur springs trail to build some retaining walls to make
a wheelchair ramp near the swimming area. Cut and finished
a section of trail near Shelter 1 to make that section of
trail wheelchair accessible.
7/27/04-7/29/04:
Painted, built, and placed trail signs on the Mt. Creek trail.
Thursday was the day of the deluge, and we went around and
watched water on our trails to see how they were draining in the
hundred year flood. Our trails were doing great. The
Mt. Creek trail had no standing water, and no water running down
the trail for more than twenty feet. The Firetower Trail
was doing great, there was some standing water, but the drainage
nicks that we cut were shedding water like crazy. The
tread was doing a good job of staying out of the water as well
(for the most part). After the rain stopped, we went out
and hiked Mt. Creek, there were only two small puddles.
The rest of the trail was very dry.
