The Friends is about helping the Park to be used by our community.
Most opportunities to help don't require a big commitment in time, just what you can spare.  All of the opportunities pay back in lots of delight and more time spent in the park. How bad can that be?

Some of the areas you can help with:

Trail Maintenance and Development

Join a dedicated group of volunteers who meet periodically to help the park staff by repairing and building our hiking and biking trails, maintaining bridges, etc. Enjoy the beauty of the outdoors; get fresh air and fellowship with other park lovers. For more information contact Bill Renninger at 232-4887 or email.

4th Saturday Educational Program

Help publicize and plan these wonderful educational programs for children and adults. These informative programs provide a way for families to spend quality time and learn about the treasures found in nature. Topics include hiking, Native Americans, aquatic ecology, and more.

Programs generally last from 10 a.m. to 12 noon once a month. Many parents bring a picnic and take advantage of the hiking trails which range from very easy (around the lake) to strenuous and challenging.

For more information contact Ann Littlejohn at 879-6464 or email.

Aquatic Ecology Classes

We need teachers and assistants for these small classes for 5th graders who come from the schools to enjoy hands on experience with water creatures. The kids have a blast when they put on their wading boots and wade in the shallow streams to collect insects which they can look at under microscopes. If you want to remember how much fun this can be, come and watch their faces as they discover the mysteries under the water.

Training is provided along with a very attractive Paris Mountain State Park Teacher T-shirt. You can help as much or as little as you like. There are 10-12 week classes in the Spring and in the Fall. Classes are held twice weekly 9 a.m. to 12 noon.  Volunteers are also needed to purchase supplies and restock kits which are delivered to the schools prior to the visit. For more information contact Cathy Taylor at 244-5565 or email.

Forest Ecology Classes

We need teachers and assistants for these small groups of 5th graders who come from the schools to explore the forest. The class includes digging into a small area of the forest floor to see what lies underneath. Children gain a new respect for nature, as they delight in the hidden world of bugs, worms, and other exciting living beings. The classes meet for 3 months in the Spring and 3 months in the Fall. They meet twice a week from 9 a.m. – 12 noon.

Training and a Paris Mountain State Park Teacher T-shirt are provided.  Volunteers are also needed to purchase supplies and restock kits which need to be delivered to the school in advance of the class. For more information contact Cathy Taylor at 244-5565 or email.

Friends Day Volunteer

Friends Day at Paris Mountain State Park has been very well received by the Greenville Community. In April 2003 we will have our 4th Annual Friends Day. This festive educational event includes footraces on the trails, scavenger hunts for the children, educational exhibits, boating, food, music, and more.

There are many ways to volunteer to help with this special event, by setting up, cleaning up, helping with parking, being a guide on the trails, planning events, and helping the day to run smoothly.

For more information contact Debbie Fowler at 268-7933 or email.

Hospitality/Social Events

Help plan social events including luncheons, annual meetings, drop-ins, etc. For more information contact Jenell Vassy at 242-1306 or email.

Public Relations

Help with publicity, presentations, brochures, flyers, etc. For more information contact Ben Muldrow at 250-2099 or email.

Fundraising/Grant Writing

Get involved with an exciting project, raising money to renovate the historic bathhouse built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp.

There is a lot of support for this project and as of February 6, 2003, we had raised over $200,000. We will still need funds to develop programs, so help is always needed.

You can help by writing grants, approaching local businesses for in-kind donations of materials, making presentations to local groups about the bathhouse project, or helping plan and implement special fundraising events. For more information contact Gene McCall at 370-1550 or email
