The latest happenings and other miscellaneous issues from your friendly neighborhood Park Ranger.

For the second consecutive year, Paris Mountain State Park (PMSP), ranked #1 in a very competitive federal trail program. For this next cycle, we will be building a new trail off of Brissy Ridge down to Reservoir 3, a beautiful 25 acre lake.

Ben Blitch one of our trail crew members is leaving us to return to school. Adam Winton plans to carry on with their great work but needs to find someone that shares his passion for trail building. We are accepting applications for a new trail crew associate. Experience is not necessary, just a desire for the excitement of working outdoors.

PMSP will again be the beneficiary for Alcoa’s goodwill. Arbor Day is this Sat, Dec 4 at 10am. As part of Alcoa’s 10 million Trees by 2025, we will be planting 40 saplings throughout the park. A helping hand with a shovel is always welcome if you want to join us. Meet at Shelter 1 at 10am.

For those of you that are already members of the Friends of Paris Mountain State Park, mark your calendars for January 22. Its our annual Friends Pot Luck party at Camp Buckhorn and a good time is always had by all. Entertainment and camaraderie provided. The festivities start at 7pm. If you aren’t a member of the Friends group this will be the perfect night to join.

This week Cathy Taylor had her last school program for the fall season. Over 800 children have participated in our programs this season, learning about the forest and aquatic ecology. Wading through Mountain Creek or digging in the dirt children connected with the environment and learned what makes Greenville special.

We have a new roof on the Park Center!!!!

Starting February 16, 2005 the South Carolina Park Service will have a central reservation system, by calling 1-866-345-PARK (7275) you can instantly make a reservation for any rental facility. Soon to come! Internet reservations…

For the first time in over 2 years PMSP will be fully staffed!! Mark Davies will be our new Park Ranger and Kyle Adams will be our new Park Technician. Look for these new smiling faces.

Mark is engaged and we would like to help him move into a nice house here in the park. The house that came with the property transfer by Greenville Water System needs some renovation. We are looking for a “Jack-of-All-Trades” lead carpenter. We need your referrals!

A dedicated group of young adults, Americorps, will be volunteering at the park again in January and we hope to utilize this manpower under the supervision of a good lead carpenter. Send us your recommendations.

If you have any leftover building supplies we want to keep them out of the landfill.  We need doors, drywall, vanities, kitchen cabinets and appliances. If you have something we can find a way to put it to good use. And by donating it to the Friends of Paris Mountain State Park you can take it as a tax deduction.

Again thank you for your support. PMSP continues to exceed expectations and it is because of our amazing Friends.

Sincerely,
Ty Houck
Park Manager
