Our Philosophy

Calicaro is a boutique winery producing hand crafted small lot artisanal wines of truly exceptional quality. We source the best fruit from great vineyards and work in collaboration with meticulous and innovative growers to provide us with a foundation for great wine. We believe exceptional wine cannot be made from anything less than exceptional fruit.

We allocate an extraordinary amount of time to finding, building and nurturing relationships with growers and very specific vineyards. We believe we can best develop varietal and terroir expression by deep knowledge of a specific vineyard. In some cases we are developing relationships with well known and highly regarded vineyards that already supply fruit to highly sought after “cult” wines. In other cases we intend to build relationships with vineyards that we consider “hidden gems.” We believe this will allow us to collaborate effectively with the grower, build long term relationships and allow us to source the fruit at fair prices that reward the grower and provide excellent value to our customers.

Often our “hidden gem” vineyards adjoin the renown vineyards that already command very high prices for their grapes and the wine made from those grapes. We will offer similar or even higher levels of quality and varietal and terroir expression at attractive prices. We think that over time our “hidden gem” vineyards will establish their own cult reputations.

Many of our wines will be made with a single vineyard designation. We expect to use this approach on our Pinot Noirs and most of our other wines. We make our wines at a state of the art cooperative crush facility in Northern California, close to the vineyards from which we source our fruit.
